II.      Text Learning

(I)       Words and  expressions

eg:  He was so deep in his reading  that he wasn’t aware that his father had entered.

Students read the  text , find these qualities to answer the question. What unique qualities do  online students have to possess?

b)     Be able to  communicate through writing.

c)     Be willing to speak  up if problem arise.

d)    Take the program  seriously.

e)     Accept critical  thinking and decision making as part of online learning.

f)      Be able to think  ideas through before replying.

g)     Keep up with the  progress of the course.

Students read the text again, find the information  to fill in the blanks.

Keep up with the  progress of the course. 

What is the  conclusion?

People who have  the qualities discussed above usually make very successful online students.

(IV).Active  expressions

a)         The virtual  classrooms plays an important role in(在某方面扮演重要角色) today’s learning community.

b)         More people are becoming  aware of (意识到……online  learning that allows them to study at home

c)         The visual barriers hinder  some students from expressing(阻止某人做某事)themselves.

d)        In addition(另外),students are given time to reflect on(思考,反应)the information before replying.

e)         Be willing to speak  up (大声说出来)if problem arise.

f)           Take the  program seriously(认真对待). 

g)         Make the right  decisions based on (以……为基础,基于……critical thinking.

h)         Other people were  finished with(完成,结束) their work and studies.

i)           Time is given to allow  for (考虑到……,为……留出余地)careful development of answers.

j)           Oline learning is  normally sequential and requires commitment on the students’ part(就某人而言).

k)         Keeping up with(跟上……赶上……the class and completing all the work on time is  vital.

l)           The instructor may  have to remind the students of (提醒某人某事)the  need to keep up.

Students read  the sentences and find the meanings of these active expression.

(V).Sentence  patterns

1.        While regular schools still exist , the  virtual classroom plays an important role in today’s learning community.

While , 而……

While”  is used to show contrast.

2.       In the virtual  classroom nearly all communication is written, so it is critical that  students feel comfortable expressing themselves in writing.

It is critical/ important/ necessary/essential/vital  that +subject +(should) …….

In the that-clause of “It is critical that…”  pattern, we should either use “should +bare infinitive” or simply use bare  infinitive. Very often, native speakers use only the bare infinitive.

Students learn and  translate the sentences into English.

a)我喝清咖啡而他喜欢加奶油的。

I drink black coffee while he prefers cream in his  coffee.

b) 大部分同学期待上网学习英语,而有些同学根本不想上。

While most students look forward to learning English  online, some cannot bear the thought.

c) 关键是老师不应该惩罚回答错误的学生。

It is critical that the teacher (should) not punish  the students who give incorrect answers.

d)跟上网络课程的进度十分重要。 

It is critical that you (should) keep up with  the progress of an online course.

III.Listening

Students listen  to a passage followed by five questions, choose the best answer from the four  possible choices.

A. They hadn’t appeared online yet.

B. They hadn’t met the teacher.

D. They hadn’t noticed anything strange.

d) What did the  speaker notice?

A. There were students missing from the online  class.

B. There were too many things for him to tell  others.

C. Everyone had studied online before.

D. There were 27 instead of 26 people in  the forum.

e) Why did the  teacher NOT make herself known to the class at first?

A. Because she wanted to scare the students.

B. Because she wanted to see if students would  leave.

IV.Speaking

Pair work.  Students ask each other questions about their language learning experience  and act out their dialogues. Give a questionnaire to help them develop their  dialogue.
